Serena Williams had a rather horrible week in Rio as the world no.1 lost singles and doubles in the early stages of both tournaments.
On Tuesday, Serena lost to Elina Svitolina 6-4 6-3; the American was clearly struggling especially in the second set with an injury to her right shoulder. Williams has been battling with this injury for some time, and she had already to retire from Montreal because of this issue.
Long as the mood is gloomy, that shoulder injury doesn’t bode well for Serena at the US Open….

Serena w/d from Montreal citing shoulder inflammation. Could barely spin a serve at the end of the 2nd set. Can she bounce back @usopen?

I didn’t expect to win. SVITOLINA
After the match, Elina commented “The feeling is unreal, and I still can’t believe this match ended with a win for me. I was trying to be focused because she’s a great player with great experience coming back in many amazing matches. In the end, it was just point by point.”
Next vs. Kvitova
Svitolina will play Petra Kvitova for a place in the semi-final. The head to head is 2-1 for the Czech.
