In an unexpected turn of events, Jiri Lehecka secured his second ATP Tour title at the Brisbane International on Sunday, January 5, 2025. The Czech star’s victory came after two dramatic retirements in the semifinals and final matches.
Lehecka faced Grigor Dimitrov in the semifinals and was leading 6-4, 4-4 when Dimitrov had to retire due to injury. This gave Lehecka a significant boost of confidence heading into the final.
In the final, Lehecka was up against Reilly Opelka, who had an impressive run, including a victory over Novak Djokovic in the quarterfinals. However, Opelka’s physical demands caught up with him, and he retired early in the first set while Lehecka was leading 4-1.
Lehecka’s victory marks his second ATP title, having previously won in Adelaide last year. The 23-year-old is now ranked No. 24 in the PIF ATP Live Rankings and has fond memories of his Australian performances.
