Serena and Venus Williams won the gold medal in doubles in 2000, 2008 and 2012; they were the hot favorite to triumph also in Rio, but eventually they have been shocked in the first round by Safarova and Strycova. The Czech team didn’t have much trouble against the Americans to win 6-3 6-4.
After the match, Serena commented “I wouldn’t stay it’s devastating. We had a chance to compete for our country; we did the best that we can. We had a blast out there.”
Venus has also lost in the first round in singles (defeated by Flipkens) while Serena demolished Gavrilova in the opener and she is still the favorite for winning the gold.
