The 2025 tennis season begins with hopes of redemption for Stefanos Tsitsipas, who seeks to rebuild after a turbulent 2024. Known for his finesse and creativity on the court, the Greek star has faced challenges maintaining his past dominance, as noted by Andy Roddick during a recent podcast discussion with Jon Wertheim.
Roddick highlighted Tsitsipas’ recurring issues, particularly his first-serve return, which remains a glaring weakness. Despite marginal improvements, with first-serve return points won rising from 27% in 2023 to 28% in 2024, his return game overall continues to struggle, winning only 20% of return games last season. Roddick acknowledged Tsitsipas’ exceptional skills but lamented his inability to sustain the level that once saw him nearly defeat Novak Djokovic in the 2021 Roland Garros final.
Tsitsipas’ 2024 season yielded just one title, the Monte Carlo Masters, and only one additional final appearance in Barcelona. His Grand Slam performances were underwhelming, with a first-round exit at the US Open and no progression beyond the quarterfinals at other majors. These results contributed to a decline in his ranking from world No. 3 in 2021 to No. 11 by the end of 2024.
As Tsitsipas prepares for the 2025 Australian Open, he aims to reignite the brilliance that once defined his game. While challenges remain, the Greek star is determined to start fresh and prove his potential once again.
