Auckland, New Zealand – Former U.S. Open champion Emma Raducanu has withdrawn from the Auckland Tennis Classic due to a back injury. The British tennis star, who was seeded sixth for the tournament, was set to kick off her 2025 season against Robin Montgomery of the United States. However, Raducanu announced her withdrawal just hours before her first-round match.

Raducanu, who has been struggling with injuries throughout her career, expressed her disappointment in a statement released on Monday. “I’ve tried my best to be ready. I love Auckland and the fans here, but unfortunately, I’ve picked up a back niggle and I won’t be ready in time,” she said.

This setback comes as a blow to Raducanu, who had high hopes for the new season after ending her 2024 season on a high note at the Billie Jean King Cup. Despite her recent injuries, Raducanu remains optimistic about the year ahead. She recently hired renowned fitness coach Yutaka Nakamura to help build more resilience into her body.

In addition to Raducanu, second-seeded Elise Mertens of Belgium also withdrew from the tournament due to injury concerns. Both players are aiming for a strong comeback at the Australian Open, which begins on January 12 in Melbourne.

Raducanu’s fans and supporters are hopeful that this withdrawal is just a precautionary measure and that she will be fit and ready for the upcoming Grand Slam tournament. The young British star has shown great potential and resilience in the past, and many believe she has what it takes to compete at the top level once she overcomes her injury woes.

As Raducanu focuses on her recovery, the tennis world eagerly awaits her return to the court. With her talent and determination, there’s no doubt that she will continue to be a force to reckon with in the world of tennis.
