Novak Djokovic has weighed in on the doping controversy surrounding World No. 1 Jannik Sinner, commending his doubles partner Nick Kyrgios for his candid remarks. Both players, currently preparing for the Australian Open warm-up event in Brisbane, addressed the ongoing doping cases in tennis during media sessions.
Kyrgios, known for his outspoken nature, criticized the doping violations involving Sinner and WTA No. 2 Iga Swiatek. He called the revelations “disgusting for our sport” and emphasized his commitment to clean competition, referencing his own injury struggles and refusal to resort to banned substances. Kyrgios also expressed frustration over the delayed handling of Sinner’s case, questioning the integrity of his team.
While Swiatek accepted a short suspension and has been cleared of wrongdoing, Sinner’s situation remains unresolved, with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) appealing the initial decision that absolved him. They are seeking a ban of up to two years for the Italian.
Djokovic echoed Kyrgios’ concerns about transparency and inconsistency in doping protocols, highlighting the prolonged uncertainty faced by some players. While maintaining his belief in Sinner’s character and commitment to clean sport, Djokovic criticized the lack of communication during the five-month investigation period.
Both Djokovic and Kyrgios will begin their 2025 campaigns in Brisbane, teaming up in doubles before launching their respective singles seasons.
