As the Brisbane International kicks off, all eyes are on Novak Djokovic, the 24-time Grand Slam champion, who is gearing up for his first match of the 2025 season. Djokovic, who is the top seed and ranked No. 7 in the world, is set to face Australian wildcard Rinky Hijikata in the opening round. This marks Djokovic’s first appearance at the ATP 250 tournament since 2009.

Djokovic’s participation in the Brisbane International is particularly significant as he aims to secure his 100th ATP singles title. After winning his 99th title at the Paris Olympics in August, Djokovic is determined to make his mark in Brisbane before heading to Melbourne for the Australian Open.

About playing doubles with Kyrgios

In addition to his singles campaign, Djokovic is also teaming up with Nick Kyrgios in the doubles draw. This partnership is highly anticipated, given their past rivalry and recent friendship. Djokovic and Kyrgios will face unseeded opponents Alexander Erler and Andreas Mies in their first match. The winners will then take on top seeds Nikola Mektic and Michael Venus in the second round.

Djokovic expressed his excitement about the doubles partnership, stating, “It’s going to be fun. We’ve never teamed up so let’s see. You know, we texted about it, and we spoke earlier in Wimbledon about playing together when he’s back on tour. We’ve got the first chance right away in the first week of the season.”

The Brisbane International main draw will run from December 29 to January 5, providing Djokovic with the opportunity to gain valuable match practice ahead of the Australian Open. Djokovic’s potential path to the title includes challenging opponents such as Gael Monfils, Alexei Popyrin, Frances Tiafoe, and possibly Grigor Dimitrov or Holger Rune in the final.
