Rennae Stubbs, Serena Williams’ former coach, has advised Carlos Alcaraz to model aspects of his game after tennis legend Roger Federer to enhance his serve and overall performance. Stubbs highlighted Alcaraz’s need to adjust his serve for better accuracy and more “free points,” particularly due to his relatively shorter height compared to his top rivals.

At 6’0″, Alcaraz stands shorter than peers like Jannik Sinner and Daniil Medvedev. Stubbs recommended he flatten his serve, a technique Federer (6’1″) mastered, to exploit angles and corners effectively. “Roger wasn’t a big guy, but he could hit the corners like nobody else,” Stubbs explained, encouraging Alcaraz to follow suit for greater consistency and impact.

Stubbs also likened Alcaraz’s early playing style to Federer’s, describing both as initially flashy with a penchant for risky shots. She noted Federer’s eventual shift toward strategic forehands and crosscourt precision, a change that bolstered his dominance.

The advice comes as Alcaraz, a four-time Grand Slam champion, continues refining his game to maintain his position as World No. 1 while addressing vulnerabilities.
