Coco Gauff has been identified as one of the leading contenders for the 2025 Australian Open following her remarkable resurgence at the end of 2024.
The 20-year-old American began 2024 strongly, defending her ASB Classic title and reaching the semifinals of both the Australian Open and French Open. However, she struggled on grass and hard courts in North America, failing to defend her US Open and Cincinnati Open titles and enduring early losses at Wimbledon and the Paris Olympics.
A coaching change mid-season saw Gauff part ways with Brad Gilbert and bring Matt Daly into her team ahead of the Asian swing. The move proved fruitful as she clinched the China Open and the prestigious WTA Finals, defeating Aryna Sabalenka and Iga Swiatek en route.
Starting 2025 ranked No. 3, Gauff’s intense training and late-season success have drawn praise. Former doubles world No. 1 Rennae Stubbs remarked on her podcast, “Coco Gauff has absolutely put her hands up to be one of the favourites for the Australian Open.”
Stubbs also highlighted the success of other players, including Jasmine Paolini, who had a career-best year in 2024, winning in Dubai and finishing runner-up at Roland Garros and Wimbledon. With Paolini set to turn 29, Stubbs believes she is in her prime and poised for continued success in 2025.
