The tennis world is abuzz with the announcement of a groundbreaking rule for the upcoming United Cup. Organizers have introduced tactical timeouts in mixed-doubles matches, marking a world first in tennis. This new rule allows players or captains to call a 60-second timeout to discuss strategy by pressing a large red buzzer in the team zone courtside.
The timeout can only be used while on serve and not between the first and second serves. Each team is allowed a maximum of one timeout per match. This rule will not apply to singles matches.
According to United Cup tournament director Stephen Farrow, timeouts are intended to initiate a pause in play, providing teams with an opportunity to discuss tactics and potentially change the momentum of a match. “We’re excited to see how the best tennis players in the world and their teams utilize this new tool,” Farrow said.
The 18-team United Cup will kick off the 2025 season from December 27 to January 5 in Perth and Sydney, ahead of the Australian Open Grand Slam in Melbourne. Each team will feature three men and three women, with ties comprising one men’s and one women’s singles and a decisive mixed-doubles clash. Top players like Iga Swiatek and Alexander Zverev have already signed up to participate.
The introduction of tactical timeouts is expected to add a new layer of strategy and excitement to the United Cup. It will be fascinating to see how teams leverage this new tool to gain a competitive edge and captivate fans worldwide.
