Novak Djokovic and Kei Nishikori reach the final in Toronto after an excellent week.

Djokovic

Nole didn’t play at his very best in the first few rounds, but he managed to improve as the tournament progressed. The world no.1 played an excellent semifinal against an inspired Monfils to dismiss the Frenchman in just 73 minutes (6-3 6-2).

Djokovic acknowledged that his serve helped him through the match “I’ve been working on my serve a lot the last couple of years, and I think especially on the second serve it has given me an advantage, more depth on the second serve and so forth. In this tournament, it is not working very well but in general, in past couple of years it has served me very well.”

Nishikori

Kei didn’t know what to expect in Toronto. The Japanese no.1 was at his first tournament after he retired from Wimbledon and he surprised anyone after reaching the final. After battling in the first set (Kei won the opener at the breaker), Nishikori strolled in the second set to win the match 7-6 (6) 6-1.

After the match, Kei commented “I think he started much better in the first couple games, especially. He was hitting very good serves and was very aggressive until the 5-3 game. I started returning better, and he was missing a little bit. I think he had more chances to get the first set.

After that, he started playing a little slower. I knew I had to step it up. Otherwise, he’s going to come back. I’m just happy to win today.”

Head to head

Djokovic leads Nishikori 9-2. The world no1. Is the obvious favorite for the title.
