Novak Djokovic, a 24-time Grand Slam champion, surprised the tennis world by appointing former rival Andy Murray as his coach for the 2024 Australian Open. The unexpected collaboration has sparked intrigue as Djokovic, an icon in the sport, seeks to secure an 11th Australian Open title.
Murray, who retired following the Paris Olympics in August, quickly transitioned into coaching. “I’m excited to join Novak’s team in the off-season and help him prepare for the Australian Open,” Murray stated. Djokovic echoed the enthusiasm, detailing his search for a coach with shared experiences and multiple Grand Slam victories, eventually landing on Murray.
Gael Monfils, an experienced French player, sees Djokovic as a strong contender in Melbourne despite stiff competition from Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz, who are regarded as the favorites. Monfils, winless in 19 matches against Djokovic, emphasized the Serbian’s unparalleled success in Australia and the potential of his partnership with Murray.
While Monfils himself has no plans for a coaching career, preferring to pursue opportunities in the financial sector, he views Djokovic’s latest move as a fascinating twist in the ongoing saga of tennis legends.
