Ilie Nastase: “Jannik Sinner would have been banned for 2-3 years if he wasn’t No 1 and was Romanian”

Romanian tennis player Ilie Nastase has criticized Jannik Sinner's doping case, claiming he received preferential treatment due to his status and nationality. The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) ruled Sinner did not serve a ban, but Nastase argued he would have faced a suspension of 2-3 years if he were not Romanian.

Ilie Nastase, the legendary Romanian tennis player, recently made headlines with his controversial comments about Jannik Sinner’s doping case. Nastase, known for his fiery personality and outspoken nature, claimed that Sinner received preferential treatment due to his status as the world No 1 and his nationality.

In August 2024, the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) announced that Sinner would not serve a ban for failing two doping tests in March. The tests revealed the presence of clostebol, a banned anabolic steroid. Sinner’s defense was that the substance entered his body through a massage from his former physio, Giacomo Naldi, who had used a spray containing the steroid to treat a cut on his finger. The tribunal accepted Sinner’s explanation and ruled that he carried “no fault or negligence”.

However, Nastase argued that if Sinner were not the world No 1 and was Romanian, he would have faced a suspension of 2-3 years. Nastase’s comments highlight the perceived inconsistencies in how doping cases are handled in tennis, especially when it involves high-profile players.

Nastase’s remarks come in the wake of another doping scandal involving Simona Halep, his fellow Romanian, who was initially given a four-year ban for testing positive for the banned blood doping agent roxadustat at the 2022 US Open. Halep’s ban was later reduced to nine months following her appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

Nastase’s comments have sparked a debate about the fairness and transparency of the anti-doping system in tennis. While some agree with Nastase’s view that Sinner received lenient treatment, others argue that the tribunal’s decision was based on the specific circumstances of the case and the evidence presented.

As the tennis world continues to grapple with doping issues, Nastase’s outspokenness serves as a reminder of the complexities and challenges involved in maintaining the integrity of the sport. His comments also underscore the need for a consistent and unbiased approach to handling doping cases, regardless of a player’s status or nationality.
