In a recent episode of the Tennis Weekly Podcast, World No. 8 Andrey Rublev expressed skepticism about the newly announced coaching partnership between Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray. Djokovic, who shocked the tennis world by appointing his former rival Murray as his coach for the upcoming Australian Open, has faced mixed reactions from fans and players alike.
Rublev, in particular, questioned whether Murray could bring anything new to Djokovic’s already highly refined game. “Novak is one of the best players in history, so I don’t know if Murray will be able to contribute anything,” Rublev said. He added, “But the positive energy, stemming from their friendship, can sometimes be more beneficial than anything else at this level”.
Despite Rublev’s doubts, there are those who believe that Murray’s deep understanding of Djokovic’s game and his psychological insights could be valuable. Jamie Delgado, Murray’s former coach, pointed out that Murray’s sharp strategic mind and familiarity with Djokovic’s playing style could help the Serbian ace stay ahead of his opponents.
However, Rublev also raised concerns about how Murray might handle Djokovic’s emotional outbursts on the court. “It will be interesting because sometimes, Nole is too emotional on the court and speaks harshly to his team, so I am curious to see how Murray reacts in those situations,” Rublev said.
As the tennis world eagerly awaits the start of the Australian Open, all eyes will be on Djokovic and Murray to see if their partnership can translate into success on the court. Only time will tell if their friendship and mutual respect can overcome the challenges that lie ahead.
