Emma Raducanu has opened up about the apprehension many tennis players feel regarding supplements, particularly in light of Iga Swiatek’s recent doping scare. Swiatek faced a provisional suspension after testing positive for trimetazidine, a prohibited substance later traced to contaminated melatonin pills.
The ITIA ultimately accepted Swiatek’s explanation, reducing her suspension to a symbolic one-month ban. However, Raducanu revealed that the incident has amplified existing anxieties within the tennis community about supplement use.
Speaking at the National Tennis Centre in London, the 2021 US Open champion explained, “A lot of players are quite apprehensive. Everything we take, we’re very aware of how easily things can be contaminated. There are certain supplements I might want to take, but I can’t because they’re over-the-counter and not batch tested.”
Raducanu noted the financial challenges of ensuring safety, with batch testing costing around £1,000 per product. “For essential supplements, it’s worth the expense, but it forces us to eliminate non-essentials,” she said.
The Brit emphasized extreme caution in her diet and hydration practices, adding, “If I leave my water around, I’m very on edge about it. But it’s just part of the sport.”
Raducanu’s comments highlight the shared challenges players face in maintaining fairness and avoiding inadvertent violations, underscoring the need for vigilance in a demanding competitive environment.
