Tsitsipas, who was up two sets to love, seemed on track to win his first Grand Slam title when Djokovic left the court for a long break. Upon returning, Djokovic mounted an incredible comeback to win the match in five sets.
Salnikova described the break as “infinitely long” and noted that Djokovic came back as a “different person,” implying that the break gave him a significant mental reset. She admitted that, after the break, she knew the match was over for her son.
While the break itself was within the rules, Salnikova hinted at the possibility that Djokovic might have used breaks strategically, suggesting the Serb’s use of such interruptions could raise doubts. She also acknowledged that, while it may appear disrespectful in informal settings, it was within the bounds of the sport’s regulations.
In his post-match comments, Djokovic joked about the break, claiming that his “guardian angels” helped him during that time. However, Salnikova’s comments reflect lingering skepticism about the timing and impact of Djokovic’s break in one of the most high-stakes matches of his career.
