Richard Gasquet Criticizes 'grotesque' Handling Of Swiatek, Sinner Doping Cases

Richard Gasquet has voiced strong criticism of the International Tennis Integrity Agency’s (ITIA) handling of doping cases involving Iga Swiatek and Jannik Sinner, calling the process “grotesque” and lacking transparency.

Gasquet condemned the disparity in how the cases were managed, highlighting that the ITIA allowed Sinner to continue competing despite two failed tests in March, later attributing the results to a contaminated spray. Conversely, Swiatek faced a provisional suspension after testing positive for a banned substance in August but received only a 22-day ban after proving her melatonin medication was contaminated.

“These cases lack the clarity and structure expected in professional sports,” Gasquet told La Depeche. He emphasized that doping allegations should be handled through a formal process involving trials and deliberations, instead of the confusing and inconsistent announcements that followed both cases.

Gasquet also expressed concern about the broader implications for tennis, warning that such mismanagement undermines trust in the sport’s integrity.
