Wim Fissette, coach of Iga Swiatek, has addressed the recent doping controversy surrounding the Polish tennis star, asserting his unwavering confidence in her innocence. Despite Swiatek’s positive test for trimetazidine, a banned substance, Fissette revealed that the situation did not deter him from joining her team.

The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) determined that the substance likely entered Swiatek’s system through contaminated non-prescription medication used for jet lag and sleep. Acknowledging her lack of significant fault, the ITIA imposed a one-month suspension. Swiatek, provisionally banned from September 12 to October 4, has since served most of her suspension and will be eligible for the United Cup and Australian Open.

Fissette joined Swiatek’s team last month, replacing Tomasz Wiktorowski. Speaking to The National, he expressed admiration for Swiatek’s character and resilience, noting, “Iga is a fighter on and off court; this was another tough battle she won.”

Swiatek’s suspension led her to withdraw from major events in Beijing and Wuhan, but she returned strongly at the WTA Finals in Riyadh. Fissette highlighted the trust and mutual respect in their team, emphasizing a focus on supporting Swiatek as she prepares for the 2025 season.
