Denis Shapovalov has voiced his disapproval after Iga Swiatek received a one-month suspension for a doping violation, sparked by an incident in August. The world No. 2 was found to have trace amounts of the banned substance trimetazidine in her system, which she attributes to contaminated melatonin supplements.
While Swiatek was found to be “not significantly at fault” and her suspension was reduced to a short one month, it has not been without controversy. Shapovalov, known for his outspoken nature, took to social media to express his feelings about the decision. On X (formerly Twitter), the Canadian player simply posted, “1 month ban eh.”
Shapovalov’s comment adds to the ongoing debate over the effectiveness and fairness of drug testing within the sport, as some believe the punishment is insufficient, while others feel the issue remains unresolved.
