According to Italian Davis Cup captain Filippo Volandri, Jannik Sinner’s suspension for doping would be the greatest injustice in history.

In March, Sinner tested positive twice for the illegal steroid clostebol; the infractions were made public in August. The International Tennis Integrity Agency [ITIA] ruled that the 23-year-old was not at fault or negligent and did not suspend him, but he did lose Indian Wells ranking points.

Three months after it first surfaced, Sinner’s case has garnered a lot of attention, and now his Davis Cup captain, Volandri, has defended him.

According to an interview with QS Sport, Volandri stated he didn’t even want to consider the world No. 1 getting banned.

Volandri talked about it and said: “I don’t even want to think about a possible disqualification of Sinner, given his honesty and the irrefutable evidence he has provided. But if there is a person with broad shoulders, it is Jannik. A disqualification would be the greatest injustice in history.”

Volandri’s remarks were made a few days after Italy won the Davis Cup for the third time, making them the first country to do so since the Czech Republic in 2012–13. In 2024, Sinner was once again a standout player, winning the rubber against Tallon Griekspoor to help the team defeat the Netherlands 2-0 in the final on Sunday.

Ranked world no.1, the Italian played his last match on the 24^th of November when he defeated world no.40 Tallon Griekspoor 7-6(2) 6-2 in the Rubber 2 of the Davis Cup (draw).

Presently, during this year the Italian achieved a compiled 73-6 win-loss record. The Italian clinched 8 titles in 2024 at the Australian Open, Rotterdam, Miami, Halle, Cincinnati, U.S. Open, Shanghai and the Nitto ATP Finals. Sinner was the finalist in Beijing.
