Nick Kyrgios has recently spoken out against the current state of tennis commentary, taking issue with pundits who are overly critical of players. The Australian tennis star, who is set to make his comeback in January at the Brisbane International after a two-year injury layoff, expressed dissatisfaction with the way some commentators approach their role.

Kyrgios, who has dabbled in commentary during his time away from the tour, having worked with top broadcasters such as BBC, ESPN, and Eurosport, admitted that while he’s not a fan of being critical, he believes there’s room for improvement in tennis broadcasting. He emphasized that the physical demands of today’s game make it unfair to relentlessly criticize players, especially when they’re working so hard to compete.

Moreover, Kyrgios advocated for a more inclusive and knowledgeable commentary approach. He believes that those in the booth should have a deep understanding of the sport, particularly the lower-ranked players in the Futures and Challenger circuits. “We can’t just continually promote the same players over and over again,” Kyrgios stated. He wants commentators to bring attention to players that don’t often get recognition, emphasizing the hard work and journey required to break into the top 128 and make it to a Grand Slam.

Kyrgios also argued that tennis commentary needs to evolve with the times and become more dynamic, encouraging more insightful and less one-dimensional discussions about the sport.
