Following Italy’s Davis Cup title defense, Matteo Berrettini lavished praise on his countryman and teammate Jannik Sinner.
Sinner and Berrettini both won a doubles match together and swept their singles rubbers to go undefeated at the team tournament this week. The world No. 1’s attitude toward being on a team was also revealed by the former Wimbledon finalist, who said Sinner’s conduct spoke volumes about him.
After Sinner defeated Tallon Griekspoor to guarantee Italy’s victory, Berrettini defeated Botic van de Zandschulp of the Netherlands in Sunday’s final. The world No. 1 finished the season with a 73-6 record, eight titles, and the Davis Cup, capping an amazing season.
For Berrettini, who was unable to join the winning team in 2023 due to an injury that ended his season early, it was also a memorable moment. He broke down in tears.
Berrittini talked about why he got emotional and said: “Why was I crying after the victory? The last few months, the last few years, the injuries, and the moments when I couldn’t step onto the field passed before my eyes. The feeling of holding the cup and my teammates was special. This year has made me aware of my level. I have the fortune of playing with and against the best in the world, Jannik, who pushes us to always do better. The goal is to get closer and closer to him, and I believe that next year will be the right one.”
