Bencic to miss the Olympics

Belinda Bencic is the latest “tennis casualty” for the Olympic Games in Rio. Yesterday, Federer shocked the tennis world by announcing his withdrawal (from Rio and the also the entire season); now Belinda is the second Swiss that had to retire.

Bencic has just recovered from a wrist injury, but she feels she is not prepared for the North American swing. Therefore, she decided to give it a miss to Rio to get ready for Cincinnati, New Haven, and the US Open.

The statement

Belinda released the following statement on the social media.

“It is with a heavy heart that I have to withdraw from this year’s Olympics.

Although I have recovered from the wrist injury that I sustained at Wimbledon at the end of June, I am behind in my training schedule and am therefore not completely ready to take part in Rio.

I will be using the next few weeks to fully prepare with my coach Melanie Molitor for Cincinnati, New Haven, and the US Open.

I will be giving my full support to the other Swiss tennis players as well as all of the Swiss athletes that are competing in Rio and I will be following them closely on TV.

Belinda”
