Medvedev Explains Why It Was Difficult To Work With Coach Gilles Simon In 2024

Daniil Medvedev’s 2024 season was filled with challenges, marking his first trophyless campaign since 2017. Despite a promising start with a runner-up finish at the Australian Open, his year ended on a disappointing note, particularly against Jannik Sinner, who became a recurring obstacle. Medvedev faced Sinner six times throughout the season, winning only once, with their overall head-to-head record now at 8-7 in the Italian’s favor.

Sinner’s dominance extended to the ATP Finals, where he defeated Medvedev again, underscoring his superior form in 2024. Reflecting on his struggles, Medvedev openly admitted that Sinner was his biggest challenge. “If you want to win a title, you will face him at one moment. It’s not easy to beat him. A lot of people try. A lot of people fail,” he acknowledged.

Medvedev’s coaching team has also been under scrutiny. While Gilles Cervara has been instrumental since 2017, the addition of Gilles Simon this year aimed to provide new insights. However, the packed schedule due to the Olympics hindered Simon’s ability to contribute significantly to Medvedev’s game. “Simon and I got to know each other better this year. Now we will try to do a thorough pre-season preparation together and see what comes of it,” Medvedev shared in an interview with Kommersant.

Looking ahead to 2025, Medvedev is focused on refining his game to counter Sinner’s formidable presence. “I have an idea on how to improve my game with the balls I’m using now. It’s not a fact that it will work, but I need to try to find a way to beat Jannik Sinner again,” he stated.

As he sets his sights on reclaiming his place at the top, Medvedev remains motivated to challenge for the world No. 1 ranking. A potential showdown with Sinner at the 2025 Australian Open could be a defining moment in his quest to regain dominance.
