Tennis legend Justine Henin has praised Novak Djokovic’s ability to win Olympic gold in Paris in 2024 despite difficulties elsewhere.
This summer, Djokovic defeated title favourite Carlos Alcaraz in an exciting final at his fifth Olympic Games in Paris, finally winning gold and escaping heartbreak. That turned out to be the pinnacle of the 37-year-old’s season; aside from that event, the Serbian did not win a title.
Alcaraz defeated him in the Wimbledon final, and Jannik Sinner defeated him in the Shanghai Masters final. Sinner also defeated him in the Australian Open final four.
In an interview with Eurosport, former world No. 1 and fellow Olympic champion Henin called Djokovic’s triumph “amazing” and hailed his season as a success.
She talked about it and said: “Of course his season was successful. He went and got the title he wanted; that was his ultimate goal. He went through a lot of phases this season, including certainly a phase of demotivation and then things to manage on a physical level too—but there was only one place where he wanted to shine. And the way he did it, I still can’t believe it. This ability, when he didn’t have a great season, when everyone was doubting him, to raise his level of play as he did and manage to be present again in a big event, it’s just phenomenal.”
