For tennis fans, rivalries are what really set this sport apart. The ongoing rivalry between Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner has intensified in recent years. They have won a lot of admiration all over the world for their extraordinary abilities on the court. Even though their most recent meetings may still be lively in the memories of their fans, not everyone may know how and when the two up-and-coming tennis stars first crossed paths.

The first match between Sinner and Alcaraz, two young teenagers took place in 2019 during the ATP Challenger Tour. The fight between Alcaraz and Sinner in the second edition of the JC Ferrero Challenger Open proved to be a fierce contest.

The Italian forced the Spaniard to work hard to win the match after he had won the first set 6-2. The match went to a decider after Sinner won the second set 6-3. Sinner put up a fierce fight, but Carlos ultimately managed to get the last laugh. He scored 6-3 to win the set. He became the first player born in 2003 to win a Challenger match with this triumph.

It’s interesting to note that both players eventually interacted with one another during the same match. In an interview with CNN Sports on November 12, 2024, Sinner disclosed that their initial conversation happened in a locker room.

Sinner talked about it and said: “I saw the draw coming out, and I said, ‘Oh, Carlos Alcaraz, I have no idea who he is! I saw the age, and I said, ‘Wow, he’s playing a challenger, it’s amazing.’ And then straight away I was impressed.”
