Emma Raducanu said her 22nd birthday was a very memorable day, even though she had to spend it in her hotel because of the recent storms that have hit Spain.

Flooding on the Costa del Sol caused the Billie Jean King Cup to start later than planned on Thursday.

Additionally, the Great Britain team was unable to leave their hotel for their first-round match against Germany on Friday.

Raducanu said: “I’m really grateful that my team, made a really big effort yesterday to make me feel really special. There were birthday banners, cake, balloons. Yeah, it was really nice, considering the weather. We couldn’t really go out or do anything, but it’s just how it goes. Yeah, even though those were the conditions, I still had a great time. It was very memorable.”

The final match of the first round is against Germany, and the Great Britain squad practised there three times on Tuesday.

Raducanu further wrote on Instagram: “22, Thank you for all the birthday wishes, I’m so grateful for all my friends too (who I couldn’t all add here) for pouring extra love into today and being there through all. Big s/o to my team for making it a special day out here.”
