Jannik Sinner’s former fitness coach is scheduled to work with Matteo Berrettini only a few months after departing the world No. 1’s group due to his doping scandal.
After it was revealed that the world No. 1 had tested positive for the prohibited drug clostebol twice in March 2024, Umberto Ferrera and physiotherapist Giacomo Naldi left Sinner’s squad.
Though fitness coach Ferrera seems to have moved on to work with Berrettini ahead of the 2025 season, Sinner’s case is still being appealed by the World Anti-Doping Agency.
Sinner said after his 2023 US Open campaign: “We worked together for two years. We did an incredible job, bringing a lot of success and then having a great team behind me. Now, because of these mistakes, I’m not feeling that confident to continue with them. The only thing I need right now [is] some clean air.”
Despite winning three ATP Tour titles and making it to a final in 2024, Berrettini is still ranked 35th in the world due to persistent injury issues.
The 28-year-old lost to Taylor Fritz at the same stage of the US Open and to Sinner in the second round of Wimbledon after missing the Australian and French Opens due to injury.
Along with any additions he makes to his coaching staff during the off-season, the Italian will probably hope that working with Ferrera will help him return to the top of the game in 2025.
