Following her victory at the US Open, Coco Gauff notably took aim at her critics, and she has since reiterated that she views backlash as a source of inspiration to get better.
At the trophy presentation ceremony following her first Grand Slam victory at Flushing Meadows in September 2023, Gauff addressed her doubters.
Gauff began this season with the Auckland Open title in January after an outstanding 2023 campaign, but she suffered multiple early exits and didn’t quite reach the same heights as the year before for several months.
After she was unable to mobilize a respectable run during the North American hard-court swing, the haters were once again loud. However, Gauff acknowledges that dealing with negative comments on social media can occasionally be challenging.
When asked how she responds to the comments, she said: “I don’t really talk to my team or anybody. Sometimes my boyfriend, but not to a deep extent. I do journal a lot, and I think it’s just a lot of self-reflection and self-awareness. I do have a therapist. I haven’t gone in a while, but I do that. I try to go once every two weeks, schedule permitting.”
She added: “A lot of people were critiquing my season, you know, ‘Flop era.’ I know all the Twitter terms. I think it is a combination of her, myself and obviously my parents. My dad is pretty petty like me. I’m pretty sure the first thing he’s going to say when I call him is something about what people were saying about me.”
