When Jannik Sinner won the year-end world No. 1 trophy in Turin, his mother broke down in tears. Sinner is participating in his third career ATP Finals and will be ranked No. 1 in the world at the end of the season for the first time.
This season, the Italian has won seven championships, including the US Open and the Australian Open. ATP Chairman and fellow Italian Andrea Gaudenzi gave Sinner the Year-End No. 1 trophy on Monday. German legend Boris Becker also joined him on the podium.
Hanspeter and Siglinde, Sinner’s parents, were standing in the middle of a touching scene in the Inalpi Arena. In a video posted to X, his mother was seen crying as his father proudly watched the 23-year-old accept the trophy.
The Italian expressed how much the moment meant to him after receiving the trophy. He expressed gratitude to the audience and acknowledged the sacrifices made by his family when he was a child.
He said: “It’s a nice feeling; [it is] special sharing these kinds of moments here in Italy with the crowd. This would not be possible without all the people I have around, and especially the kind of people I want to keep forever, because it has a journey from the beginning.”
He added: “I just heard that my mom was crying, which is something very cute. Only they know from my early age and stages, when I was around 13, how many sacrifices we made as a family.”
