Roger Federer mentioned that the younger generation is raising the bar in tennis, and Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner are two examples. The Swiss genius who had dominated tennis for the previous 20 years with players like Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, Rafael Nadal, and Serena Williams, brought about a major change when he retired in 2022.
During his visit to the Shanghai Masters, Federer shared his opinions on the recent changing of the guard. Although the 37-year-old Djokovic hasn’t decided to retire yet, he has definitely slowed down. The Swiss also said a few kind words for Serena Williams, Andy Murray, and Rafael Nadal.
Federer said during a media interaction in Shanghai: “You can feel the changing of the guards. Serena Williams retiring, Andy Murray retiring, and Rafa getting closer and closer. Novak obviously having a tough year overall, but then winning the Olympics and claiming what he always wanted to do, you know? That elusive Olympic gold, that was incredible for him to do that.”
The 43-year-old implied that Sinner and Alcaraz are capable of handling the sport by waving to them.
Federer added: “So yes, you feel that everything is shifting, and then honestly, I mean Sinner and Alcaraz winning each two Slams, that shows you that the wave is truly coming now. The changes are happening, and they are consistent, and they’re fantastic to see play.”
“Si avverte il cambio della guardia: Serena si è ritirata, Murray si è ritirato, Rafa è sempre più vicino…
Sinner e Alcaraz hanno vinto due Slam a testa, questo dimostra che i cambiamenti ci sono”
