In response to tennis journalist Jon Wertheim’s recent controversial remarks regarding her appearance, Barbora Krejcikova has criticized him for his lack of professionalism. According to the two-time Grand Slam champion, this is now standard practice in the sports industry, and she urged reporters to treat athletes with more dignity going forward.
Recently, Krejcikova competed in the WTA Finals, making it to the semifinals before losing. Many tennis fans were frustrated on social media after Wertheim made a sarcastic remark about the Czech star’s forehead during an appearance on the Tennis Channel discussing the event.
Wertheim said: “What do you think I am? Barbora Krejcikova. Look at the forehead when Krejcikova and Zheng take the court. Eighthead.”
Krejcikova, who uses social media more frequently than most athletes, noticed the remarks and sent the journalist a resolute message in response. First and foremost, the former world No. 2 expressed her disappointment at hearing such remarks in the women’s tennis community.
She wrote on X: “You might have heard about the recent comments made on Tennis Channel during the WTA Finals coverage that focused on my appearance rather than my performance. As an athlete who has dedicated herself to this sport, it was disappointing to see this type of unprofessional commentary.”
Krejcikova felt she had previously kept quiet about these matters and didn’t want to do so again. In the same sentence, she urged reporters to act more professionally to steer clear of such outrageous disputes.
She added: “This isn’t the first time something like this is happened in the sports world. I’ve often chosen not to speak up, but I believe it’s time to address the need for respect and professionalism in sports media.”
