Some more bad news for the tennis fans in Toronto. After Andy Murray, also Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal have decided not to play the Rogers Cup this year.
Federer
This is the second straight year that he Maestro has decided not to play the competition. Apparently, the Swiss still needs to recover from Wimbledon.
“I have made the tough decision to withdraw from Rogers Cup,” Federer commented. “Toronto is one of my favourite events on the calendar, and I am disappointed that I won’t be able to compete in front of the great tennis fans in Canada.
“Looking ahead, it is best for me that I take more time after Wimbledon. I look forward to coming back to Canada next year, and I wish Karl Hale and everyone at Tennis Canada a very successful tournament.”
Nadal
Rafa has been sidelined by a wrist injury since the Roland Garros. The Spanish legend is expected to fine tune its preparation for the Olympics in the next two weeks with Andy Murray in Mallorca. Unfortunately, the Rogers Cup is coming a bit too early for Rafa.
“I am disappointed to announce I won’t be able to come to Toronto to play this year,” Nadal said. “I only started practising a week ago after my wrist injury, and I am not ready to play such an important event.
“I am very much looking forward to playing in Toronto in a couple of years since I have always been treated great in that tournament and have a lot of great Canadian fans.”

NOT THIS TIME |
This is the result of bad planning. Roger, Rafa and Andy know that they cannot compete properly if they play 6 tournaments in 1 months (Rogers Cup; men, doubles and mixed in Rio, Cincinnati and the US Open).
