In his most candid interview yet, Jannik Sinner has talked about the suffering he has endured as a result of his failed doping tests.

In March, Sinner tested positive for anabolic steroids twice; however, an impartial panel found him not guilty and did not punish him.

Sinner’s claim that the prohibited substance entered his body as a result of a massage from his physiotherapist, who had applied a steroid-containing spray to treat a cut on their finger, was accepted by the tribunal.

With the release of his interview with Sky Sports Uno in Italy last month, Siner has now offered his opinion on the events of the past few months.

Sinner said in the interview: “I don’t wish anyone to go through what I went through. I was in Monte Carlo and Alex Vittur called me and said ‘Jannik, you are positive.’ I answered him ‘Yes Alex, I’m always positive.’ He said ‘No Jannik, you are positive for doping’. I had a moment of total darkness, I didn’t know what to say. Nothing was coming out of my mouth. I immediately tried to figure out how it could have happened, I hadn’t done anything.”

He added: “I didn’t even want to believe it: I felt lost. It was hard. I couldn’t talk to anyone about it; people who knew me and saw me play had noticed that something was wrong. At Wimbledon, I was white on the court, but even after that I was afraid in Cincinnati I went to the club and wondered, ‘How will the other players look at me? What will they think of me?’ There I really realized who my friend is.”
