Coco Gauff has shown her value in the Asian Swing despite criticism after making mistakes with her forehand, serve, and double-fault strokes. In addition to Gauff, her new coach Matt Daly is also in the news because of his teenager’s outstanding performance in Riyadh.
Andy Roddick goes into further detail about how Gauff’s game improved as a result of the change in her mentorship, even as she dazzles another tough opponent with extraordinary skill.
Following the 2024 US Open, Roddick’s response to Gauff’s outstanding performance was unexpected. This season, the former US Open champion was unable to successfully defend her title at Flushing Meadows.
In the 2024 China Open and the Wuhan Open, Gauff displayed amazing skill following a disappointing loss at the American Slam. This American WTA star left the Wuhan Open as a semifinalist after winning the China Open.
She has already won the two Group Stage matches at the 2024 WTA Tour Finals against Jessica Pegula and Iga Swiatek. Roddick was taken aback by Gauff’s unexpected performance improvement.
Roddick shared his remarks about Gauff in a podcast and said: “I think Coco looks actually great post-US Open. I almost feel like she needed to get through that tournament and that title defence to kinda open up a little bit. And one thing I have noticed JW that serve looks way better and I know she double-faulted some, I think it was in Wuhan but the grip is better right so if I can do it on my iPhone then you can see it all.”
He added: “She kinda opened it in the start, it’s more straight on and what I am seeing is that you’re not getting double faults, where one is 3 feet below the neckline and the next is 5 feet long. The variance in misses is way less. So credit to Matt Daly who I don’t think anyone had in their bingo card and wrongfully so cause he has been a great coach.”
Roddick emphasized how Gauff’s performance in the Asian Swing shows how hard she has been working to strengthen her areas of weakness. He gives credit to Matt Daly, Gauff’s new coach, who the American began working with in September.
