Since making a significant announcement about the ATP Finals in Turin, Novak Djokovic has been in the news today.
Djokovic has declared that he will not be participating in the battle in Italy due to an injury, ending weeks of speculation. Although Ivanisevic and Djokovic had been working together until March, their five-year relationship ended this year.
The Serbian has had knee problems all year and had to withdraw from the French Open, so he wore a knee brace to Wimbledon.
Djokovic’s year is essentially over because he missed the Tour Finals; now, the focus will shift to the Australian Open in January. However, Djokovic’s lack of a major title to add to his impressive collection of career titles raises some questions for him in 2024.
There are obviously not many coaches who understand Djokovic’s style, but the Croatian will now coach Elena Eybakina. Questions have been raised about the 24-time Grand Slam champion’s ability to add a 25th to his collection in 2025.
Ivanisevic talked about Djokovic and rising young stars Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner in an interview with Tennis Majors. He said: “I can’t know if he is motivated and how much, but the moment he decides to play, it means that he is eager to play. Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz are convincingly above the rest of the field, but I put Novak in the group with them, because when Novak really wants to play, he is still the best in the world, in my opinion. The other thing is how much he wants to play and when – we saw at the Olympics if he goes out on the court like that, then he can still win a Slam.”
He added: “Also, it depends on his ranking and the draw, when does he need to face Sinner or Alcaraz, lots of factors, but can Novak do it? Yes, he can. You can never write him off, I would never do that. And good for me – I won’t have to root against Novak, I can stay his fan unless he switches to women’s tennis!!”
