Kyrgios Defends Underarm Serve As Strategic Play Against Nadal

Nick Kyrgios famously shook up Wimbledon in 2014 by defeating Rafael Nadal, notably using an underarm serve—a rare tactic that raised eyebrows and criticism at the time. Reflecting on that controversial choice, Kyrgios firmly stands by his decision, asserting that it was a legitimate strategy against Nadal, who is known for his deep baseline position when returning.

On a recent appearance on the Louis Theroux Podcast, Kyrgios recounted the intense reaction from the tennis community after he used the underarm serve in his fourth-round victory over Nadal. He argued that the serve was a practical response to Nadal’s returning style: “He is known for returning really far back in the court, so it’s hard to get a free point,” Kyrgios said. “I needed to do something to get him out of this rhythm, and I did it.” Although critics saw it as disrespectful, he noted it was effective and helped him win the match, bringing attention to his distinctive and bold approach to the game.

Kyrgios has often drawn attention for his actions on the court, both for his unconventional style and his outspoken personality. From his tactical choices to his high-profile sledges, such as a comment directed at Stan Wawrinka in 2015, Kyrgios has frequently challenged tennis norms. He defended the Wawrinka incident as well, describing it as a “good old-fashioned sledge” rather than an affront.

Despite his varied controversies and an injury hiatus, Kyrgios remains unfazed and is set to make a comeback at the 2025 Australian Open. He’s also quick to defend his career as an overachievement, given his off-court struggles and dedication to supporting young athletes. For Kyrgios, the underarm serve is a reminder of his unique approach to tennis, combining unorthodox methods with fierce competitiveness in a sport traditionally bound by formality.
