Aryna Sabalenka Clinches Year End World No. 1 After Swiatek Falls To Gauff

Aryna Sabalenka has officially secured the WTA’s coveted year-end No. 1 ranking for 2024, making her the 16th player in WTA history to close a season atop the rankings. Sabalenka’s place was solidified after Iga Swiatek, her closest competitor, lost to Coco Gauff at the WTA Finals, making it mathematically impossible for Swiatek to surpass Sabalenka’s points total, regardless of her remaining matches this week.

This milestone crowns a remarkable season for Sabalenka, who has dominated the tour with two Grand Slam titles—the Australian Open and the US Open—and two WTA 1000 tournament wins, giving her an impressive 6,000 ranking points. Though Swiatek matched Sabalenka in points with one Grand Slam title and four WTA 1000 titles, Sabalenka maintained a 1,046-point advantage entering the WTA Finals.

The year-end No. 1 spot honors Sabalenka’s consistency and success across major tournaments. She joins an elite group, becoming only the second player born in 1998 or later to finish the season at No. 1, after Swiatek, who previously held the spot in 2022 and 2023. Her journey to No. 1 this year underscores the rising competition and new dynamics in women’s tennis, as the Belarusian star prepares to extend her dominance into the upcoming season.

Since the WTA introduced its ranking system in 1975, tennis icons such as Steffi Graf, Martina Navratilova, and Serena Williams have also held the No. 1 year-end ranking multiple times. Sabalenka now adds her name to this storied list, marking a new era as she looks ahead to sustaining her position at the pinnacle of women’s tennis.
