In a direct criticism, Nick Kyrgios stated that Andy Murray should have a more dignified retirement because the physical toll he took to continue his tennis career was not worth it.

Three-time Grand Slam champion and Scottish tennis mainstay Murray ended his remarkable career in August after losing to Dan Evans in straight sets in the Olympic men’s doubles quarterfinals.

Retirement was a common topic of conversation during the 2019 Australian Open, and the 37-year-old had major hip surgeries in both 2018 and 2019. Murray was unable to advance past the third round in any of the four major tournaments, even though he was able to continue competing for five more years.

However, Kyrgios made it clear that he does not plan to retire but that he will not put his body through the same kind of suffering that Murray did.

Reflecting on Murray’s journey, Kyrgios stated: “Seeing how Andy Murray is navigating his exit from the sport, alongside Rafael Nadal, I don’t want to reach a point where I’m crawling to the finish line. What Andy Murray has achieved in this sport ranks him just behind the likes of Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, and Nadal. He is deserving of a departure that reflects his monumental achievements.”

In conclusion, Kyrgios asserted: “The surgeries and the associated pain simply are not worth it when you consider everything he has achieved.”
