Emma Raducanu’s former coach, Mark Petchey, advised the 21-year-old to ignore other people’s viewpoints, pointing out that people attempt to empathize with her without confronting any of her particular circumstances.

With her 2021 US Open victory, Raducanu created history by setting several records in just her second Grand Slam main draw appearance. She was the first qualifier in the Open Era to win a Grand Slam championship. Furthermore, the British player, who was eighteen at the time, won the title single-set.

However, injuries have plagued Raducanu’s career ever since. Until Wimbledon this year, when her stellar run ended in the fourth round against Lulu Sun, she was unable to win another singles title or even make it to the second week of a Grand Slam.

Since winning the US Open, the young player’s form and career trajectory have been the subject of much discussion. Raducanu was coached by Petchey in 2020, and he suggested that she ignore these sounds.

In a recent interview, Petchey stated that no handbook could have prepared her for the impact that victory would have on her career.

Petchey expressed his remarks and said: “I think it’s important for her to block out the noise. I think everyone’s going to have an opinion on her and broadcast it, but people are trying to insert themselves into her shoes, which they have never worn before, even in their career or life. But it is easy to say these things from the outside looking in. When she won the US Open back in 2021, no blueprint or manual could explain what was going to happen in her life or career after that breakthrough moment.”

According to Petchey, it can be difficult for a player to turn down sponsorship and endorsement deals, especially if they’re young and just getting started on the tour.
