Swiatek Triumphs In Dramatic Comeback At Wta Finals Opener

Iga Swiatek made a stunning return to the court at the WTA Finals, rallying from a set and a double break down to defeat Barbora Krejcikova. The five-time Grand Slam champion, playing her first match since the US Open, struggled early, admitting she felt “rusty.” Krejcikova, who had defeated Swiatek in their previous two meetings, quickly gained a commanding lead, going up 6-4, 3-0, leaving Swiatek facing an uphill battle.

But Swiatek dug deep, breaking Krejcikova twice to gain a 4-3 advantage in the second set. Krejcikova briefly leveled at 5-5, but Swiatek found her rhythm, winning seven consecutive games to claim the second set 7-5 and race to a 5-0 lead in the third. Krejcikova fought back with a break, but Swiatek quickly closed out the match, claiming victory with a final break in the decider.

Reflecting on her win, Swiatek said, “At the start, I felt rusty, but I’m happy I found a way to play more solid. Barbora took advantage early, and the score went her way quickly, but I wanted to make the most of every chance.”

The support of the crowd, Swiatek noted, fueled her comeback. “I could hear the crowd cheering, and it really helped in those tough moments. Thank you for believing in me even when my game wasn’t at its best,” she expressed.

With this hard-fought win, Swiatek showcases her resilience, setting a determined tone for her WTA Finals campaign.
