Holger Rune’s season continued to fall short of expectations with a semi-final loss to Alexander Zverev at the Paris Masters, leading former world No. 1 Jim Courier to deliver a pointed critique of the young Dane’s game. Rune, who was once ranked as high as No. 4, has struggled to maintain form in 2024, with no ATP titles since April 2023 and limited success in major tournaments.
On Tennis Channel, Courier compared Rune’s style to “full-blown jazz exploration,” saying it lacks consistency and structure
. “It’s like throwing paint against the wall,” Courier commented. While he acknowledged Rune’s natural talent, Courier believes his game is too instinct-driven, saying Rune needs to establish a “sense of order” to succeed consistently at the top.
Rune’s season now heads to Metz for the Moselle Open, where he is seeded fourth. Although he missed out on qualifying for the ATP Finals in Turin, he aims to end the year on a high note.
