Ugo Humbert defeated Carlos Alcaraz 6-1, 3-6, 7-5 on Thursday to advance to the Paris Masters quarterfinals by leveraging the energy of the home crowd and putting on one of his best performances to date.
In the first set, which was so lopsided that four-time Grand Slam champion Alcaraz ironically waved his racket and smiled at the audience after holding in the sixth game, a wave of forehand and backhand winners had Alcaraz down 5-0.
After missing opportunities in the third set, Alcaraz served to stay in the match despite dominating the second set. Alcaraz remained unfazed and won easily 5–5. The crowd jeered a replayed point.
In the post-match conference, the Spanish opponent also gave him praise. He said: “I have to congratulate Ugo. His performance has been really high. The way he hits the ball is unbelievable.”
Although Alcaraz acknowledged that Hubert deserved to win, he added that it was more challenging for him because of the court’s unusually high speed, particularly given Humbert’s shots’ low trajectory.
Alcaraz added: “The stats came out that this is the fastest court in the Masters 1000, probably on the tour. For example, the Davis Cup indoor court [was] way slower.”
Alcaraz congratulated Humbert after a tough loss and wrote on Instagram: “Congratulations @ugohumbert for the win last night and good luck for the rest of the tournament! See you next year Paris!”
