While downplaying his chances of making it to the ATP Finals in Turin, Stefanos Tsitsipas acknowledged that he had a fantastic season.
This week at the Paris Masters, Tsitsipas defeated Francisco Cerundolo in three sets on Thursday, advancing to face Alexander Zverev in the quarterfinals.
The Greek has qualified for the year-end championships each year since winning the ATP Finals on his debut in 2019, though he runs the risk of missing out in 2024. After a poor start to the season, the 26-year-old needs to win the Paris title to get into the top eight of the race.
The former world No. 3 acknowledged after defeating Cerundolo that he was not concerned about qualifying at this point in his season.
He talked about it and said: “I don’t think about it too much. It’s a long season and I want to play my best tennis, but you have to have a solid year to qualify. So far, I haven’t had a great season compared to the last few years, so I can’t expect to qualify suddenly. It’s not something that worries me or concerns me, I just want to enjoy the game here in Paris.”
With Zverev now the top-ranked player remaining in the draw, Tsitsipas will have a big test on Friday.
Although the Greek is ahead 10-5, Zverev, a French Open finalist, has more than doubled Tsitsipas’s 2024 point total, and the German is currently in third place and has already qualified for Turin.
