In a tense match with many ups and downs, Alexei Popyrin defeated fourth-seeded Daniil Medvedev 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (4) in the Paris Masters’ second round on Wednesday.
The 25-year-old Australian had lost his last three meetings with his Russian opponent before winning his first Masters 1000 title this summer in Montreal. Together, Popyrin and Medvedev committed 86 unforced errors at the Palais Omnisports.
In the decisive set, Medvedev fell behind 4-1 but rallied to force a tiebreaker, where Popyrin played with greater aggression. Popyrin scored a match point after Medvedev double-failed, and the Australian scored the goal.
Medvedev lost in the Paris opening round for the third time in a row. This season, he hasn’t taken home a championship.
Medvedev recently had the opportunity to appear on the main stage of France’s longest sports show, and it appeared that he enjoyed his time there. In addition, he had a great conversation with the show’s crew and took part in the makeup artists and gossip.
