In his remarks, Daniil Medvedev repeated Jannik Sinner’s view that the International Tennis Federation’s (ITF) decision to permit off-court coaching is unlikely to have a major effect on the sport. Their perspective contrasts sharply with that of Taylor Fritz, who recently voiced his dissatisfaction with the rule change.
The tennis community is divided over the ITF’s new policy, which will allow off-court coaching at all international tennis levels starting on January 1, 2025. The change has drawn criticism from people like Fritz, Denis Shapovalov, and Brad Gilbert, the former coach of Coco Gauff.
On social media, Fritz expressed his annoyance at the announcement and blasted the ITF for undermining the sport’s strategic and mental aspects.
Fritz wrote on X: “Can we stop ruining the 1v1 mental/strategic aspect of the sport PLEASE.”
Fritz was not alone in his worries, though, as Sinner played down the significance of the new off-court coaching regulations. Sinner maintained the mental component of the sport by stating during his pre-tournament press conference at the 2024 Paris Masters that although coaches might offer guidance, the players were still on their own when competing.
Sinner said: “Yeah, I don’t think it will change incredibly much. Even now they are just some coaches who still, you know, give some advice at some times. So, you know, I believe that this sport is still — as a player, you are alone in the court and trying to figure out alone what the situation is.”
After losing to Alexei Popyrin in the second round of the Paris Masters, Medvedev reiterated Sinner’s feelings. The world No. 5 stated in his press conference following the game that he didn’t think off-court coaching would have a significant impact on the sport.
Medvedev said: “I don’t know. I don’t think it can make a huge difference. It can make some difference, and I’m okay with it. Like, you know, if some coach tells my opponent to serve to his forehand more now, whatever, it’s a tennis game. It’s okay. He could have thought about it himself. If it’s his coach who tells him, I don’t care. For me, it’s not a problem. Yeah, and I don’t have anything against it or for it. If it would not be there, I would be happy. It’s there; I’m happy. Whatever.”
