Even though Carlos Alcaraz has had an incredible 2024, he has maintained that only one player will be crowned the top male tennis player of the year.
During the European summer, Alcaraz won both the French Open and Wimbledon titles, solidifying his place as one of the two new kings of the men’s game.
Although Alcaraz has won all three of his meetings with the Italian, he has maintained that this year belongs to his toughest rival, Jannik Sinner.
Ahead of the season’s last ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Paris, Alcaraz said Sinner is the player who has elevated the game the most in the past 12 months.
Alcaraz shared his thoughts about Sinner and said: “It doesn’t matter that I have beaten Jannik three times. Probably I didn’t play good tennis in some tournaments. You know, my percentage of wins this year is really, really high, but Jannik is at another level this year, over 91% of wins this year. So just a few players have done this before.”
He added: “I think every player is looking to be more consistent during the year. In every tournament that you’re going to play, you want to go far or as farther as you can. That’s my goal for next year. In the tournaments in which I didn’t play well or I didn’t go as far as I wanted, I just tried to do it. I will try to not lose in the first rounds; probably this year I have lost in the first rounds.”
Alcaraz continued by explaining why he feels more rested in the last few weeks of the season this year, despite having trouble maintaining his form in the latter parts of the lengthy and taxing tennis year in the previous two years.
