Jack Draper, 22, clinched his first ATP 500 title with a hard-fought victory over world No. 24 Karen Khachanov, 6-4, 7-5, in the Vienna final. This latest win, following his Stuttgart Open ATP 250 title in June, further establishes Draper as one of Britain’s promising talents. His triumph in Vienna ensures him a top-15 world ranking, marking a successful season after injuries once challenged his rise.
Reflecting on his season, Draper acknowledged the mental and physical demands, but voiced determination to challenge tennis elite Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz next season. “I’m really happy with my progress. I’ll take a short break and return with bigger motivation to shake up the top,” Draper said, following his victory.
Draper’s rise hasn’t been without obstacles. Plagued by physical setbacks, he previously dropped in rankings, which saw him playing in Challenger events and questioning his potential. “I felt frustrated, but I knew if I could get my body and mind in a good place, I’d compete at this level,” he said.
His recent performances have demonstrated his resilience. Despite an abdominal injury in Tokyo last month, Draper rebounded, joining an elite group of British winners in Vienna, including Greg Rusedski, Tim Henman, and Andy Murray.
Draper’s focus now shifts to the Paris Masters, where he hopes to carry his momentum. “I’ve been improving, and that’s what matters,” he shared. For Draper, this season’s successes have fueled his belief that he can soon compete with the sport’s best.
