After confirming her absence from the Japan Open, Paula Badosa made the announcement to skip the WTA Finals. After being in some good form recently, the Spanish player’s ending was disappointing. Fans had high expectations for Badosa because of her recent performances, but her 2024 season was cut short by ongoing health problems.

In her most recent appearance, the 26-year-old advanced to the semifinals of the Ningbo Open before pulling out halfway through her match against Daria Kasatkina. Badosa was open about missing the WTA Finals despite these physical problems, saying she hopes to make a big comeback the following year.

When Badosa was interviewed earlier this month, she outlined her 2025 season plans. Remarkably, Badosa competed to earn a spot in the Riyadh WTA Finals. Her withdrawals from the later stages of the Asian Swing proved costly, despite her ranking eleventh on the Race to the WTA Finals leaderboard.

Badosa talked about missing the year-end event and said: “It has never been my goal to go to the Masters Cup. This year my goal was to be as high as possible. Think that four months ago I was 120th in the world, and for me to be 10th or 11th in the ranking now was already a lot. Being in the Finals was not in the plans, and I also think that what I have to learn is to choose the tournaments well and take care of myself physically and mentally. If it had been an objective, I would have tried to play in Wuhan or now in Tokyo, but I prefer to take care of myself physically and mentally, which is my priority.”
