After suffering an injury the day before her Japan Open final, Sofia Kenin was overcome with tears on Saturday.

With decisive victories over Daria Kasatkina and Katie Boulter, the American advanced to Sunday’s final matchup with top seed Qinwen Zheng. Given that Kenin hasn’t taken home a WTA singles title since the Lyon Open over four years ago, the stakes are high.

Before the big match, Kenin and Bethanie Mattek-Sands had a rough semi-final in women’s doubles. When Kenin decided she could not continue, the American pair was trailing Laura Siegemund and Ena Shibahara 5-2 in the opening set.

As Siegemund and Shibahara were given a clean passage through, Kenin cried on the court as she realized she had not only missed the opportunity to win another doubles title but also that her singles campaign was in danger.
